History
Growing Minds, Building Futures
TMSA Public Charter Schools began its journey in 2007 with a bold vision — to inspire students through a rigorous education in math, science, and technology while nurturing character, responsibility, and leadership. Over the years, that vision has evolved into a thriving network of high-performing public charter schools across North Carolina.
2007–2010: The Beginning of Excellence
In 2007, TMSA (Triad Math and Science Academy) was officially established. Just one year later, in 2008, the first TMSA school — TMSA Triad — opened its doors, laying the foundation for a tradition of academic excellence. By 2010, TMSA Triad had grown significantly, moving into its current permanent campus to better serve its expanding student body.
2012–2014: Expanding the Vision
The success of TMSA Triad paved the way for the opening of TMSA Triangle (Triangle Math and Science Academy) in 2012, bringing high-quality STEM education to the Triangle region. Within a year, in 2013, TMSA Triangle transitioned to its permanent building, ensuring long-term growth and stability. In 2014, TMSA Triad Elementary followed suit, moving into its own permanent facility to better serve younger learners.
2015–2019: New Partnerships and Growth
In 2015, the TMSA network expanded again with the opening of Queen City STEM School (QCSS) in Charlotte — a school governed by a separate board but sharing TMSA’s mission and values. QCSS’s growth continued, and in 2019, its secondary campus moved into a new permanent building, marking another milestone in the network’s development.
2022–2025: A New Era of Innovation
The year 2022 marked a turning point as QCSS officially joined the TMSA Family, becoming TMSA Charlotte, and a fourth school — TMSA Apex (The Math and Science Academy of Apex) — opened its doors. This period reflects TMSA’s growing presence across the state, emphasizing academic excellence, innovation, and community connection.
In 2024, TMSA Triangle High School opened its new, state-of-the-art campus in Apex — a symbol of the organization’s continued commitment to providing world-class facilities and opportunities for its students.
In 2025, TMSA Charlotte is expanded further by opening two new schools in Concord, continuing the TMSA legacy of educational excellence and community impact across North Carolina.
In 2026, TMSA Public Charter Schools will expand its mission of providing high-quality, STEAM-focused education by opening two new campuses: TMSA Triangle Durham Campus (K–7) and TMSA Triad McLeansville Campus (K–5). These tuition-free schools will offer rigorous academics, hands-on STEAM learning, character development, and a supportive, inclusive environment designed to help students thrive from their earliest years. With modern facilities, dedicated educators, and the proven TMSA model, both campuses will bring innovative, student-centered learning to their communities—giving families in Durham and the Triad region exciting new options for academic excellence and whole-child development.
TMSA Today
What began as a single school in Greensboro has grown into a leading network of STEAM-focused charter schools serving students across multiple regions. Through dedication, collaboration, and innovation, TMSA continues to empower future generations — one learner, one classroom, and one community at a time.
